PAST SHOW: RICHARD II AT THE VAULTS THEATRE 2022

A kingdom where a woman presents as a man to hold on to power. Where feudal law has returned after a ravaging civil war. Where the politics of old and young wrestle to maintain a fragile peace. And where the state has become a playground of scraps, scratches and scraped knees. A world not so different from our own.

Quandary Collective fuse Shakespeare’s words with muscular movement, bloody violence and electronic beats to create a gut-wrenching reimagining of this classic - somewhere between Mad Max: Fury Road, an episode of Game of Thrones, and what it might have felt like to stand in the pit at The Globe in 1595. This fearless adaptation explores what it means to lead a country, the insidious effects of toxic masculinity, and why gender still matters in positions of power.

PAST SHOW: ARACHNE R&D, ARCOLA THEATRE

Over five days at the Arcola Theatre rehearsal studio, Quandary Collective undertook a research and development period exploring the myth of Arachne.

Working with Ed Harris, Mairín O’Hagan, Andrea Brooks and Zoe Villiers, alongside six actor-performers, the process delved into the textures of ancient Greek language, the origins of the myth, and the act of pulling the story apart to find what still resonates now.

Through ensemble work, movement, and puppetry, we began building the world of the play - experimenting with form, image and physical storytelling as a way of re-imagining the myth for contemporary audiences.

The week culminated in a work-in-progress sharing at the Arcola Theatre, offering a first glimpse into the emerging language, landscape and possibilities of the piece.
